The importance of having MATCHING ENDORESEMENT on your home owner’s insurance policy.

In the state of Indiana, we do not have a “matching” or “line of site” regulation on property insurance. Kentucky does. Kentucky’s can be found here (Title 806, Chapter 12, Regulation 095, section 9 (1)(b).

Because the state of Indiana does not have a “matching” or “line of site” regulation on property insurance you should absolutely make sure you have a matching endorsement on your policy. It is up to you, not your agent, to make sure you are fully insured.

The purpose of the matching endorsement is to “match” the damaged item(s) (what is being repaired) to the rest of the area. In terms of roofing its common for wind to damage 1 or more areas of your roof. Most shingles that are 5 years or older have some type of fading due to the sun or weathering. Its also common that manufacturers change the color pigment or even discontinue the shingle that would match. If you have this endorsement insurance should pay for the entire roof vs just the few shingles that were damaged leaving you with a roof that’s obviously repaired with non-matching shingles.

Just remember even if you have this endorsement Adjusters will still write for a repair regardless and wait for you to tell them its unacceptable. Meaning if you have a fairly new roof and the shingle is available it may be repairable, however for those that have older roofs this may mean the difference between an ugly repair, an eye sore on the front of your home that is obviously a different color, vs bringing you back to a uniform appearance or in this case a new roof.
